Polish venture wins top award
A new venture to provide IT services to the Polish Ministry of Justice has won a major award for an IT company based at The Heath Business and Technical Park in Runcorn.
Wire Consulting and Technology Ltd has been awarded the 2006 International Discovery prize by Halton Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise for its first venture overseas – a new contract with the Polish Government.
In presenting the award, Halton Chamber Chief Executive Bill Badrock praised the enterprise of Wire Consulting. He said: “Their contribution further strengthens the Chamber’s activities in Poland and proves that businesses offering good quality services can succeed in the global marketplace.”
For Mark Slater, the award is recognition that it is sometimes worth taking a risk.
He said: “We did not go looking for work outside the UK, but when we were approached with opportunities in Poland we decided to go for it. As with everything in business, preparation is the key and having the right support and advice was critical to our success.
“The main barrier was language. It was clear from the outset that all negotiations would be in Polish and so we needed a translator/interpreter. Bill Badrock referred us to the North West Regional Language Network. Through their database of resources we were able to obtain the services of Marek Lorys of East European Business Services who enabled us to overcome the language barrier.
“Simple things attempted to trip us up along the way – not having our Certificate of Incorporation and Annual Return translated into Polish for example. Understanding the rules and laws of doing business in a different country was also a potential minefield but with research and again good preparation, we were able to reduce the risks.
“Overall, the experience was very intense but very beneficial both commercially and personally.”
The award coincides with Mark’s second anniversary of working in partnership with Andrew Beesley who founded the company less than three years ago. The pair of businessmen will celebrate two years of moving to The Heath in January.
“Being at The Heath has really helped us. Moving here was one of the best business decisions we made,” said Mark.
Most of their clients are North West-based, including several at The Heath, although the firm also provides support to companies across the UK.
